Before Seeds Come Soil

Before you even start planting, you need to have the proper soil ready for the actual planting. Make sure it is soft and allows for easy penetration. If you want to grow carrots in a pot than you will need to buy some soil to place in the pot. If you’re working in a garden, you will need to remove all the rocks from the soil to make sure the roots of the carrots can easily grow as they wish.

You should also work the soil to make it loose and crumbly, close to powder in texture. Water it to make it moist and add some peat on top to capture and preserve the moisture.

Take your packet of carrot seeds and read the instructions on it. In particular, pay attention to the instructions regarding spacing. Each root must have space in which to grow and you need to give it that. Otherwise, the roots won’t be able to branch out properly and this may disrupt the proper growth of your carrots.

Take the seeds and space them out within the soil. You need to sow them about a quarter of an inch deep. This gives them access to the water you will provide and the ability to grow properly. They will need about 4 inches of space when they become bigger, so keep that in mind. This is okay because not all seeds will germinate. It’s impossible to know in advance how many will do so. You will need to keep an eye on your saplings to make sure they have room to grow.

Make sure your seeds get enough sunlight each day, water them copiously and maintain moisture in the soil.

Then, let nature take its course and you will be rewarded by fine carrots.

How Long Does It Take

Growing carrots from seeds is a lengthy business can may take up to 80 days. It depends on the variety of carrots that you’re growing, the type of seeds, and the conditions you can supply. Carrots can grow extremely well in a pot. They don’t care whether the soil that they’re in is outdoors or indoors. As long as you give them the conditions they need to thrive they will do so. It’s as simple as that.

What You Need to Grow Carrots In Pots

1. A pot or a container that fits in your home. I can’t really be the judge of how big it should be, because that depends on your home and the space you have in it. It can be a clay pot or a plastic container. You need to buy something that was made for this because you want to be sure that it will work properly. Not any container will do.

2. Potting soil – You need soil in which the carrots are to grow. You can get this at various stores online or in your area. Add some peat to help keep the soil moist.

3. Water the soil before you plant to make the soil more ready for the actual planting and growing.

4. Place the pot where it can get plenty of sunlight every day. If the pot doesn’t get any sunlight, you have NO chance to ever grow any carrots. Be prepared for it.

5. Get some fertilizer with which to feed the carrots themselves.

Choose Your Carrot Variety

Some varieties of carrots are better fitted for growing in pots or containers. I recommend using Kinby or Nelson. Plant them an inch to an inch and a half apart and make sure they have room in which to sprout.

Each day add a little water and make sure they get plenty of sunlight. Then, just give them the time they need and they will be healthy, beautiful, and lovely.

Well, the length of time it takes a carrot to grow depends on a number of factors:

1. The seeds – carrot seeds need to germinate. However, you can buy carrot seeds which have already begun germinating. This means that once you plant them, you have less to wait until the vegetables fully grow.

2. The temperature and other conditions.

3. The types of carrots.

Let’s talk about these last two points and see exactly what influences how long it takes carrots to grow…

Temperature

One of the first things you need to know when you’re learning how to grow carrots is the conditions they need. Carrots can grow in a wide range of temperatures. This is why it is possible to grow them in warm and cold countries. However, the temperature of the soil does influence the growing rate in a dramatic way.

Germination takes 10 – 12 days to complete. If the soil temperature is about 10 degrees Celsius, it should be 10 days. If it is colder or warmer it may be slower. Overall, it is better to go a bit warmer than a bit colder. Carrots do better in warm temperatures.

In addition, you need to supply your plants with water, nutrients, and sunlight for them to develop properly. If you do, then within 52 – 78 days, your carrots should be ready for harvesting.

Why such a big range of time? It all depends on the variety of carrot. The differences can astound you.

Variety of Carrots

Each type of carrot that you plant takes a different length of time to grow. Naturally, you should plant the crop that you like best and not do so by the time it takes for them to grow. Each variety of carrot has its own taste, texture, and other attributes.

Here are the time frames of growth for carrots:

1. Orbit – Around 58 days. Wait until it has a good color to it before harvesting.

2. Thumbelina – Around 60 days in total.

3. Chanteney – This has some sub-varieties but the average times it takes for them to grow is the same at 70 days.

4. Baby spike – The fastest variety at 50 days in total.

5. Minicor – 55 days.

6. Little finger – 65 days.

7. Short ‘n’ sweet – 68 days

8. Danvers – This also has some sub-varieties which take 75 days to grow.

9. Nantes – These take 68-70 days to grow apart from the sweetness hybrid which grows faster and matures at 63 days in total.

In Conclusion

The length of time it takes to grow a carrot is determined by a number of factors:
